When I first saw The Sound of Music, I thought Julie Andrews totally rocked My Favorite Things. Then I heard John Coltrane’s version, and that blew my mind. All the other versions in between just seemed like cheap imitations.
And now, now Brad Mehldau presents a rendition that has me completely mystified. Dark, almost grotesque, utterly rich. Where do these chords come from? And how is it that I can still hear the original Julie Andrews melody in this totally different song?
